Charter fishing is an exciting adventure, and likely the part of your vacation that you’re looking forward to most. But being prepared is another matter. Read on to know just what to wear when going charter fishing.

Weather and Climate Matter A Lot

Weather is changing all the time, and that’s particularly true of most coasts. While most areas you’ll likely go charter fishing probably have great weather frequently, you’ll want to have a few essentials:

Windbreaker or Rain Gear: Whether you get an unexpected downpour or just a bunch of consistent sea spray, a windbreaker or rain gear will keep you dry. Plus, they’re the perfect insulation against early morning chills.

Light clothing: It will likely be sunny and warm wherever you go charter fishing, so bring shorts, a t-shirt, and whatever other light clothing you’re comfortable in.

Hat: When there’s a heavy sun out at sea, there’s no place to hide. Keep your head cool and your eyes glare-free with a hat.

Polarized sunglasses: It’s absolutely a necessity that any sunglasses you bring have UV protection, but polarized sunglasses are even better as they protect your eyes against the glare from ocean water. Needless to say, you want to have perfect vision when going for a catch!

The Non-Clothes Essentials

You’ll definitely want to be sure to wear the following items, both for your protection as well as the enjoyment of your trip:

Sunscreen: Even if the weather says it’ll be cloudy, bring some sunscreen in case it changes. Be sure to check for a sunscreen with an SPF of 50 or higher. You also don’t want to get chapped or burned lips, so pick up a chapstick or lip balm with SPF protection, too.

Hand sanitizer: At some point, you’ll eat. Don’t dig into your food before sanitizing your hands. Who knows what sea slime you’ll have on your mitts!

Camera: Your charter company will likely be able to snap a picture of you with your catch, but bring your own camera, too! This way, you can take pictures of whatever you’d like to savor your memories forever. Just be sure to also bring a carry case that’s waterproof to help keep it dry and protected from the elements.

What Else Should I Bring Charter Fishing?

While we’ve focused on wearables—clothes, sunscreen, and so on—there’s a lot of other things you’ll want to remember to bring. It’s a great idea to make a checklist well beforehand so that you can stock up on anything you need, and get your goods sorted before heading out. Here are some examples of things you might want to consider:

Medications, including motion sickness medication: If you have any medications you take, consider whether you’ll need them while on the boat. This can include motion sickness medication for those who don’t handle being on boats well. Not sure if you do? Take some just in case!

Food: Bring whatever you’d like to enjoy, although wrapped snacks like granola bars and jerky tend to provide a lot of nutrition in a small package, while being less messy. They can often be held in the wrapper, versus food that you need to eat with your hands. Either way, packing some hand sanitizer is a good idea.

What Does a Charter Fishing Company Provide?

Generally, your charter fishing company will provide you with bait, coolers for your food, and even be able to take your picture. You won’t need a fishing license, either. But it’s a good idea to check with the company you intend to use just to be sure you won’t be left high and dry!

Angler Fish Facts – Mystery of the Deep

Depending on who you ask, the anglerfish is either one of the most interesting deep-sea fish on the planet, or the most terrifying. There are roughly 200 different species of this fish that roam the world waters and occupy water depths of about 3000 ft.

This fish has gotten much notoriety as the “Sea Devil” in the entertainment world and can be found on the pages of comic books, in movies such as “Finding Nemo” and even on the cover of TIME Magazine.

Let’s take a look at some of the most interesting facts about this fish and why they are such a unique species in our oceans.

We offer charter fishing trips, whale watching excursion, sport fishing trips, private charters and water activities on the central coast of California. If you’re interested click here to learn more.

Angler Fish Facts #1

Let’s talk about their appearance. As one of the most distinguishing factors of this species, the anglerfish might look to you like it’s gotten in some kind of fight.

In all seriousness, it’s outer flesh membrane has an uneven texture that looks thick, marked up and maybe even scarred.

Some of these ‘scars’ are tiny organs that help the fish navigate in its near freezing black environment.

The females sport a spiny dorsal fin that hangs ominously over their large crescent mouths. This spine is an organ and called esca which emits light known as a photophore with the help of bacteria.

This organ is often used to lure in its prey and is used for hunting. The body of this fish was not designed for speed and is usually seen (not often) slowly chugging along in the water.

Anglerfish eyes are very small structures on their larger frames and are not very helpful in their dark environments. They rely on their senses to move around, hunt and eat.

We can’t forget to mention the Angler fish’s teeth. These teeth are translucent needle-like structures and frame the anglerfish’s mouth.

They are more playable than many other fish teeth as they are always working to redirect prey into the digestive tract.

Angler Fish Facts #2

Let’s talk about the female/male dynamic. Unfortunately, the males in this equation lose big time as their sole purpose for living is to find a female and mate with her.

This is no ordinary interaction. Once a male finds a female partner, he will literally latch onto her with his teeth where his flesh will eventually become a part of hers.

He will lose all of his main organs with exception to the testes for reproduction. A female has been known to carry anywhere from 3-6 male structures in her lifetime.

The male anglerfish carries out a very parasitic-like life with his host female.

Angler Fish Facts #3

Let’s talk about their behaviors. Some might say that the anglerfish is rather lazy due to its slow movements and, not exactly, sleek body composition.

The anglerfish will slowly mill around waiting for their prey to come to them. Their jaws can extend to accommodate prey two times the size of their frame.

Speaking of that frame, they can store food in their bodies which help them survive in their stark, food scarce environments.

This also makes sense considering these fish can weigh in around 100 lb at maturity.

These fish typically roam the ocean floor and are not very picky about the food that comes their way. This means that they will eat anything carnivorous in nature from crustaceans to any passing by fish.

Angler Fish Facts #4

Let’s talk about their mouth. The angler fish has a huge mouth, featuring sharply pointed teeth in rows. The rows are arranged in two rows, where the front teeth are much larger than the back row.

The teeth of the angler fish are hinged for maximum bite and to push the prey down they the hatchet. The second row of teeth feature much smaller and less sharp teeth.

This makes sense as the large teeth puncture and the smaller teeth allow the angler to break up the skin of the fish it’s eating.

Angler Fish Facts #5

Let’s talk about if their dangerous. A human can never reach the depths of the where the angler fish lives, so no they are not dangerous to humans at all.

If actually impossible, like physically impossible for a human to be able to withstand the pressure at the sea level where the angler fish lives.

Typically they live in the areas below 6600 feet below the surface of the ocean. And they live completely in darkness, that is the area they inhabit and at the depth they’re at, they see no sunlight.

A final note – People often wonder if this fish is any good on a plate. You can find the anglerfish on the market most often in Korea or Japan where they fetch a luxury price tag.

Those who have eaten an anglerfish say that the tail is the most edible portion of the fish and tastes much like lobster.

Angler Fish Facts #6

Despite being ferocious looking the orange angler fish is actually a smaller fish only growing to about 5-10 inches in length and at maximum are known to grow up to about 100 pounds.

An interesting note is that female angler fish are typically much bigger than their male counterparts.

We offer charter fishing trips, whale watching excursion, sport fishing trips, private charters and water activities on the central coast of California. If you’re interested click here to learn more.

Why Ocean Whitefish is the Most Underrated Fish in the Sea

Known to scientists by its binomial name, Caulolatilus princeps, the ocean whitefish is a species of titlefish that calls the Pacific Ocean its home. Ocean whitefish swim primarily along the coast of California, though in rare instances, they have been spotted north and south of their usual zone.

Not a lot of people know about ocean whitefish, not to mention, most of them have no idea how to distinguish one from a salmon. Ocean whitefish deserve more praise than they receive because of their graceful and calm presence in the Pacific Ocean. Since ocean whitefish are not dominant predators in the ocean, they do not raise problems with other fish, minding their business as they go about their days.

Where Are Ocean Whitefish Located?

With a few exceptions, ocean whitefish are unique to California. At times, they will swim a bit too far upstream than they are used to and they will end up inhabiting the waters near British Columbia. Ocean whitefish have also been spotted around the coasts of Peru and Ecuador, specifically near the Galapagos Islands. The cold temperature and salt levels in the Pacific Ocean make for the perfect central location for ocean whitefish.

Prime Time of Year for Ocean Whitefish

The peak season for ocean whitefish begins at the tailend of winter and continues into the following spring. The reason for this is that the water becomes cooler as the weather gets colder. Since ocean whitefish are cold-blooded, their internal temperature is not regulated by their body, but rather by their surroundings. They swim closer to the shore and the inland areas to keep warm.

Sports Fishing and Ocean Whitefish

Ocean whitefish are highly sought after and coveted by people who partake in sports fishing. The definition of sports fishing is very similar to its name, in that people fish as a sport, competing with fellow fishermen and comparing the sizes of the fish they caught. Not all sports fishing occasions are competitive, though. Some people enjoy fishing recreationally, for leisure. Sports fishing is an activity that many people enjoy, especially in the summertime.

Ocean whitefish respond best when fishermen use a standard fishing pole with bait attached to the hook. When an ocean whitefish latches onto the bait, the fish will pose a challenge for the fisherman. Ocean whitefish are known for their tendency to tug and pull against the fishing line, so anyone who catches an ocean whitefish has to put in a decent amount of effort in order to keep the fish from escaping. People engaging in an afternoon of sports fishing are always up for the thrill of catching ocean whitefish.

How to See an Ocean Whitefish in Real Life

Whether you are embarking on a sports fishing trip or you just want to sail the ocean blue while gazing at aquatic life, renting a private charter is an excellent idea. Privately-owned charter fishing boats vary in length, as well as capacity in terms of how many passengers each boat can hold. It’s vital that you check the dimensions of the charter you want to rent. Ensuring that the sport fishing boat can accommodate everyone in your party is essential as well.

Morro Bay, California, is a prime location for spotting ocean whitefish. Located in San Luis Obispo County, the water of Morro Bay is exquisite. It is translucent enough so that you can clearly observe fish swimming near the surface of the water, while also leaving something to the imagination. You might even spot a whale or two!

Rock Cod Fish: The Most Popular Catch for California Anglers

With its vibrant red scales and distinct bulbous eyes, the rock cod fish or rockfish is one of the most popular catches for California anglers. There are over 100 different subspecies of rockfish, and you can find 56 of those rock cod fish subspecies in Southern California fishing grounds. This fish is lean and has a mild flavor, making it a favorite catch of many anglers and hobby fisherman. Catching a rock cod fish can be challenging, but no guts no glory as they say.

Where is the best place to catch a rock cod fish?

Rockfish tend to congregate in deep coastal waters of about 9800 feet deep. As their namesake indicates, rock cod fish prefer waters with ample rock outcrops. Morro Bay in California is teeming with rockfish and is an ideal place for catching these tasty critters.

What’s the best way to catch a rock cod fish?

The state of California allows you to use up to two hooks per line. While it’s true that catching rock cod fish is a challenge, there is one basic but very effective way to create the ideal rigging for rock cod fishing. This rigging is called a Double Drooper Loop.

To create the Double Drooper Loop, you’ll want to use a pole that’s rated anywhere between the twenty to fifty-pound range, or fifteen to forty pound range. You’ll need a twenty-five to thirty-pound monofilament for the line. As far as the hooks go, you’ll want two, circle hooks in the 2/0 or 4/0 range for the best results. Torpedo-style sinkers or lead weights in the six to twelve-ounce range are ideal for making a Double Drooper Loop.

What do you do once the rigging is tied?

The most important step is to insert the loop through the point-side of the hole on the hook. Insert the loop through one eye of the torpedo sinker on the bottom loop. Then, loop it over the sinker.

Next, attach the bait. A strip of squid, anchovies, or sardines is ideal for catching a rock cod fish. Attach a piece of your bait to each hook. You want to make sure that the bait is attached at the end of the hook so that it will flap around in the current and attract a rock cod fish. The more natural the bait looks at the end of the line, the more likely you’ll be to get a bite.

What do you do once a rock cod fish bites the line?

If you’re using circle hooks, which are ideal for a Double Drooper Loop, you don’t want to set the hook when you get a bite. Once the fish bites, wind up. When you’ve hooked a fish, don’t pump the line, either. Instead, lift it and wind down. If you pump the line, you risk losing the fish. When it comes to catching a rock cod fish, you need to be patient. It’s vital that you use a slow, steady wind.

Don’t want to rig a line yourself? You’re in luck. There are many pre-made rigs you can buy specifically for rock cod fishing in Morro Bay. The best pre-made rigging is a braided line for the reel. You simply tie a swivel to the braid and then tie the monofilament line. Using a braided line is perfect for deep water fishing because a braided line enables you to feel positive hookups in deep water.

High tide and low tide – you’ve surely heard the terms, but you may not know exactly what they mean, and how they affect your ability to fish in the ocean. Well, you’re not alone. So in this article, we’ll explain tides for fishing in-depth, and give you the information that you need to make sure you can land a “big one” next time you go fishing on the beach!

What Is A “Tide”, And What Causes It?

Okay, before we start discussing the best tides for fishing, we need to define what a tide actually is, and what causes it.A “tide” is a fluctuation in the water level that is caused by the Moon. Believe it or not, the gravitational forces of the Moon actually interact with the water on Earth, “pulling” it outward.

The Earth rotates 180 degrees in 12 hours (naturally, since a full day is 24 hours). In addition, the moon also rotates around the earth at a rate of 6 degrees every 12 hours. To simplify things, this means that a high tide will occur about every 12 hours and 25 minutes, because this is when the moon will be the closest to any given part of the Earth. In addition, the Moon’s orbit fluctuates somewhat, as it rotates around us in a 27.5 day cycle. Tides are higher and lower based on how close it is to the earth.

Where Are Tides The Strongest?

Okay, now that you know how tides work, let’s discuss some more of the basics about them. Tides are the strongest where the water level is low – in shallow areas like harbors, bays, and estuaries, as well as islands and reefs. In these areas, parts of the land may dry out entirely when the tide is low, and become saturated with water when it’s high.

Do Tides Affect Fishing? How?

Yes, they do! When the tide goes out, fish tend to retreat to deep water, and when it comes in, they may come back to previously dry areas in search of food. Basically, this means that you need to find a deeper area to fish when the tide is low – you’re unlikely to catch many fish close to the shore. And the opposite is true when the tide comes in. More fish are likely to come back to the shallower areas in search of food.

What Are The Best Tides To Fish?

It’s best to fish moving tides. You don’t want to fish when the tide is at its highest or lowest – but when it’s between these stages. Incoming tides are great for fishing. When the water level is rising, and water is coming in from the ocean, fish “ride” this current into shallower areas in search of food. This means you can get quite a few bites if you find a reasonably deep area of water when the water is coming in! You can also fish the outgoing tide, especially if you find a small estuary or other shallow channel where fish will be swimming when they are heading toward deeper waters.

Avoid Slack Waters – Know When To Fish The Changing Tides!

While it’s not impossible to catch fish when the water is “slack”, and stopped, it’s quite difficult! So understand the tides, and when to fish the incoming and outgoing tides, to ensure you get the best results when tides for fishing on the beach!

If you’re a beginner to the exciting world of deep-sea fishing, you’ve probably heard all about how unforgettable an experience it is from anyone you know who has taken a trip out where the water gets deep blue and the fish are huge. But there are tips and tricks that can help you be better prepared for the experience, and help you to enjoy it more. Here’s a few things we’ve learned about how beginners can enjoy their first deep-sea fishing trip.

Tag along with an expert

Deep-sea fishing is exciting, challenging and exhilarating: but that means that it also has many details you need to be aware of. Mistakes can be costly, which is why, if you can, you should head out with an experienced deep-sea angler. You might find it’s best if you go as part of a mixed group that has beginners as well as experienced fishermen, so you can learn from the best while sharing the learning experience with others like you.

Learn to tie the right fishing knots

This is a skill that’s often overlooked, but anyone with experience at sea will tell you that knowing how to tie knots isn’t only helpful for deep-sea fishing. When you’re learning to fish, take some time before you head out to learn about knots: get some string or the kind of fishing line you’ll be using, and look up a few videos on how to tie the kind of knots you’ll need. When you’re deep-sea fishing, the right knots can help you tie lines to hooks of different sizes, join two sections of line together, form a loop for the catch at the end of your line, and attach monofilaments to a hook.

Develop the art of patience

Deep-sea fishing videos might only show you the big catch – and if they do, what they’re not telling you is the long periods of waiting between throwing in the line and making the big catches. A big fish might not take the bait so easily, and it can take a long time before you catch your first fish – so patience is a skill that you’ll need to take with you on the big fishing trip. Don’t give up, and keep going, because when you do get a bite, you’ll want to be ready.

Keep an open mind

If you’re only expecting to catch one type of fish, you might need to remember that there’s a whole ocean out there. Do some reading and look up what kind of fish are likely to be around the place you’re heading out to at the time of day your trip is scheduled for. Look out for other sea creatures, and don’t forget to keep an eye open for exotic sea birds – you might be surprised what you spot on your first deep-sea fishing trip.

Beyond this, make sure you pack any medications you need, particularly if you’re not sure you’ll get seasick: there’s nothing worse than losing a day’s fishing to feeling queasy. And remember always that you’re there to have a good time: breath in the air, enjoy the sea, keep your eyes open, and look forward to your dinner at the end of the day: you will have earned it!

Deep sea fishing is a wonderful experience, and beginners almost always find that their first time out on the sea is always an unforgettable trip. If you’re all set to embark on your first deep sea fishing adventure, you’ll undoubtedly find that bundled along with the excitement of venturing out into the ocean are a few questions about what you can expect.

What you get depends on what you’re looking for. If your goal is a relaxing day spent catching delicious fish, your experience will most likely be gentle and uneventful. On the other hand, if you’re after a hardcore deep-sea fishing adventure, you can easily find a thrilling game that takes you into deeper waters. Whatever you’re looking for though, here are some things you can expect on a deep-sea fishing charter.

Expect the captain’s speech

Before heading out, the ship’s captain will talk to you and the rest of the passengers – and while it’s a good welcome, it’s also going to include some important information. Listen in for the trip’s itinerary, the way to set up and use your fishing equipment, the location of the safety equipment, and some other interesting trivia. If there’s something you don’t understand right away, ask the crew after the captain’s speech is over.

Jackpots and fish bags

You might be asked if you want a bag for your fish. It’s a good idea to get one, because you never know if the one you have may be enough for your catch. And if the group is big enough, the crew might offer you the chance to pay into a jackpot. If you’re interested in the possibility of winning big for a few initial bucks, pay in, and the lander of the biggest fish wins the day.

You may be in for some rough weather

Remember that the ‘deep’ in deep-sea fishing is for real. You’re going to be out on the sea, leaving the shore behind. You can expect to encounter some rough waves, so if you think you might get seasick, it’s best to pack some medicine in your backpack, and keep your eyes on the horizon if you start to feel queasy.

Dropping your line

Eventually, when you reach the fishing spot, the boat will come to a stop. The captain might offer instructions on how to drop your line. If you’re a beginner, listen in; and even if you’ve been out before, remember the captain probably knows even more than you do; he might have some good tips for fishing in the waters he’s brought you to.

Be prepared for the jerk on the line

Deep-sea fishing isn’t as tranquil as on-shore fishing. It’s a demanding physical activity that’ll keep you on your toes. When you manage to hook a catch at the end of your line, you should to be prepared for the sharp tug that will happen when the fish you’ve hooked starts swimming away: you may need to use both your hands, because deep-sea fish pull at the line more strongly.

Those are just a few of the things you’ll need to know before you go deep-sea fishing. And of course, the most important thing is to stay safe, and remember to have fun out there!

Deep-sea fishing is a great holiday option for people who want to strike out from the coast and get to fish out in the open water; for relaxation on the open ocean, it can’t be beat. Here are a few facts you may not know about deep-sea fishing.

You can go around the world

Deep-sea fishing offers different opportunities in different parts of the world: in America you have a vast range of choice of destinations – the Gulf of Mexico, the coast of California, the coast of New England, and even deep-sea fishing off Alaska, with fish ranging from salmon to yellowfin tuna. Outside the US, you can go deep-sea fishing in the Caribbean, off islands from Jamaica to Bermuda; and if you’re interested in exotic destinations with a whole new take on the sea and seafood cuisine, try South-East Asia – Bali, Thailand or Vietnam, or New Zealand.

It takes patience

Deep-sea fishing is rewarding, but be ready to spend a few days at it. You may not get a bite right away, but you’ll see the ocean, relax in the sea breeze, and have a great time, even before you get your first catch. Trust the captain and crew of your boat – they’ll be professionals, and they’ll have plenty of tips on fishing, and plenty of sea stories to fill the hours. And if you want less conversation, consider reading Hemingway’s classic The Old Man and the Sea to remind yourself that it could be a lot worse!

You’ll catch surprising – and possibly huge – fish

Experts estimate that there are 10 million fish species in the deep sea; we know the details of a maximum of 4 million of these species. Even if you catch a well-known species like swordfish, you’ll get a look at the majesty of nature; but who knows, you may find yourself looking back at something less well known, with a sea story of your own to tell before sending it back.

You’ll learn to read the environment

As well as catching delicious seafood, and seeing the size and power of the ocean, you’ll get a sense of how the ocean environment works. See a flock of seagulls over the water? Your captain may follow them, since seagull often gather where there are small fish to be eaten. And while smaller fish might not be what you want, small fish attract big fish – even sharks – and learning to read the environment can help you land something special.

It’s still fishing

While there are a lot of differences between deep-sea fishing and fishing in rivers or lakes – you’re more likely to get wet, and you’re definitely going to be aboard bigger boats with more pulling power than you would be if you were fishing inland – deep-sea fishing still involves lines, hooks, and relaxation. It’s a great way to unplug, and to connect with the natural world whilst catching some great fish to eat; it’s just more adventurous, and you’ll probably catch different fish, including tuna, sharks, barracuda, and swordfish.

When you’re planning your next vacation or summer outing, some things never change. The flight reservations, the hotel-hunting, the room bookings, and the search for the best places to enjoy a meal are all things that we’re expecting; but packing can be a chore, even when you’re not doing anything new on the trip.

When it comes to enjoying new activities – like taking a charter fishing trip – you need to ensure that you pack everything that’s necessary, which can be a bit tough if it’s your first time. Here’s a guide to help you prepare for a great charter fishing trip.

Fishing Equipment

If it’s your first time out, you’re going to want to make sure that you’re using equipment that’s right for you; contact your charter company to see if they have any advice or special recommendations for you and your group. They’ll be happy to help you make sure you’ve got the right kind of equipment for the weather, the group, and the fish you want to catch.

The Right Clothing

It’s important to dress right if you want to enjoy your trip to the fullest. Being dressed in bulky clothes can feel stifling, while underdressing could lead to sunburns or damaged clothes. So pack some clothes that are light and summery, but simultaneously allow you to move around freely, and aren’t too delicate. Gloves and windbreakers are essential as well, because you’ll want to keep your hands safe from cuts and yourself protected from rough winds on the sea if they come up, and wear a shirt you don’t mind getting salty.

Any Medicines You Need

You never know if someone on your group might suddenly get seasick, or get too much of the sun; so make sure you take a few of the right over-the-counter solutions for problems you might have at sea. It’s particularly important to have a fully packed first aid kit handy. While a professional charter fishing company will have a kit for use on-board, it’s always a good idea to be prepared.

Keep The Weather Off

A perfect day out on the water could be sunny and calm; but the weather can turn in an instant, and you should be prepared, because the sea isn’t tame. You need to make sure that you’ve packed your sunscreen and your sunglasses, and throw in a hat and even lightweight scarves for warm and cold weather. And to keep the day going even if it rains, add a rain jacket or two.

The Right Storage

Keep an extra backpack handy in case you need to store something else on your way back. It’s best to try and find collapsible bags, because this helps you save space. Another useful tip that you need to remember is to take a separate waterproof bag/cover for your electronic equipment, so you don’t run the risk of damaging them out at sea.

As well as all of these, you’ll want to make sure you take a camera along to capture the memories of the day, and take plenty of water and snacks with you to stay fuelled up, and make sure your charter company has some big coolers with ice to keep your catch fresh on the way back home!

Taking the kids sport fishing is a fantastic activity. Not only is a fishing trip a great idea to help you bond with your kids and reconnect as a family, it’s also a wonderful way to let your children get to know the joy of spending some time outdoors and experiencing nature. Above all, it helps your kids learn the art of patience.

But how do you make sure that the fishing trip is a success? The answer is simple; you just need to make sure that you take care of certain things before you head out to the lake. Here are some tips that can help.

Bring the right fishing equipment

The kind of equipment you take can make or break your trip. Make sure you pack all the equipment you’ll need, including fishing rods, lines, and live-baits. It’s important to double-check and ensure that your fishing gear is in good working condition, and is suitable for use by the little ones. The right equipment not only makes sure that your children are safe when they’re using it, but also improves your chance of landing a catch.

Select your location carefully

Read up on the best fishing spots near your town or city, and pick your location before you get there. Select locations that are easily accessible, because it ensures safety. Also, try and pick a spot that has access to amenities like restrooms, sunshades, and trash cans, so it’s easier for the kids, who may not be used to being out on a lake with no restroom! Particularly, if you can find a spot that has an area nearby where you can picnic away from the crowds (and other fishermen), you know you’ve hit the jackpot. There’s nothing like a great day fishing with great food to give your kids happy memories of the day.

Be prepared for emergencies

Just like every other outing with your kids, a fishing trip demands that you’re well-prepared for all kinds of emergencies or unexpected needs (because almost everything, be it hunger, thirst, or a sudden craving for candies, can qualify as an emergency!) So make sure you stock your bag with plenty of water, some sandwiches, and good snacks. You’ll also need a change of clothes, a first-aid kit, and antibacterial liquids/wipes. And sunscreen is obviously a must-have.

Make sure you have fun

Every fisherman knows that a fishing trip doesn’t live or die on the fish you catch. Most often, you’ll be spending quite a long time simply waiting for a fish to take your bait, and the waiting is part of why it’s restful – but this kind of waiting can make kids impatient. Remember your kids will need to learn how to wait; lighten the time by playing word-games, enjoying the scenery, or taking the opportunity to talk to them about what’s happening in their lives. If you feel like it, you could even break the fishing spell and head over to have a picnic before you resume fishing.
