Charter fishing is an exciting adventure, and likely the part of your vacation that you’re looking forward to most. But being prepared is another matter. Read on to know just what to wear when going charter fishing.

Weather and Climate Matter A Lot

Weather is changing all the time, and that’s particularly true of most coasts. While most areas you’ll likely go charter fishing probably have great weather frequently, you’ll want to have a few essentials:

Windbreaker or Rain Gear: Whether you get an unexpected downpour or just a bunch of consistent sea spray, a windbreaker or rain gear will keep you dry. Plus, they’re the perfect insulation against early morning chills.

Light clothing: It will likely be sunny and warm wherever you go charter fishing, so bring shorts, a t-shirt, and whatever other light clothing you’re comfortable in.

Hat: When there’s a heavy sun out at sea, there’s no place to hide. Keep your head cool and your eyes glare-free with a hat.

Polarized sunglasses: It’s absolutely a necessity that any sunglasses you bring have UV protection, but polarized sunglasses are even better as they protect your eyes against the glare from ocean water. Needless to say, you want to have perfect vision when going for a catch!

The Non-Clothes Essentials

You’ll definitely want to be sure to wear the following items, both for your protection as well as the enjoyment of your trip:

Sunscreen: Even if the weather says it’ll be cloudy, bring some sunscreen in case it changes. Be sure to check for a sunscreen with an SPF of 50 or higher. You also don’t want to get chapped or burned lips, so pick up a chapstick or lip balm with SPF protection, too.

Hand sanitizer: At some point, you’ll eat. Don’t dig into your food before sanitizing your hands. Who knows what sea slime you’ll have on your mitts!

Camera: Your charter company will likely be able to snap a picture of you with your catch, but bring your own camera, too! This way, you can take pictures of whatever you’d like to savor your memories forever. Just be sure to also bring a carry case that’s waterproof to help keep it dry and protected from the elements.

What Else Should I Bring Charter Fishing?

While we’ve focused on wearables—clothes, sunscreen, and so on—there’s a lot of other things you’ll want to remember to bring. It’s a great idea to make a checklist well beforehand so that you can stock up on anything you need, and get your goods sorted before heading out. Here are some examples of things you might want to consider:

Medications, including motion sickness medication: If you have any medications you take, consider whether you’ll need them while on the boat. This can include motion sickness medication for those who don’t handle being on boats well. Not sure if you do? Take some just in case!

Food: Bring whatever you’d like to enjoy, although wrapped snacks like granola bars and jerky tend to provide a lot of nutrition in a small package, while being less messy. They can often be held in the wrapper, versus food that you need to eat with your hands. Either way, packing some hand sanitizer is a good idea.

What Does a Charter Fishing Company Provide?

Generally, your charter fishing company will provide you with bait, coolers for your food, and even be able to take your picture. You won’t need a fishing license, either. But it’s a good idea to check with the company you intend to use just to be sure you won’t be left high and dry!

Angler Fish Facts – Mystery of the Deep

Depending on who you ask, the anglerfish is either one of the most interesting deep-sea fish on the planet, or the most terrifying. There are roughly 200 different species of this fish that roam the world waters and occupy water depths of about 3000 ft.

This fish has gotten much notoriety as the “Sea Devil” in the entertainment world and can be found on the pages of comic books, in movies such as “Finding Nemo” and even on the cover of TIME Magazine.

Let’s take a look at some of the most interesting facts about this fish and why they are such a unique species in our oceans.

We offer charter fishing trips, whale watching excursion, sport fishing trips, private charters and water activities on the central coast of California. If you’re interested click here to learn more.

Angler Fish Facts #1

Let’s talk about their appearance. As one of the most distinguishing factors of this species, the anglerfish might look to you like it’s gotten in some kind of fight.

In all seriousness, it’s outer flesh membrane has an uneven texture that looks thick, marked up and maybe even scarred.

Some of these ‘scars’ are tiny organs that help the fish navigate in its near freezing black environment.

The females sport a spiny dorsal fin that hangs ominously over their large crescent mouths. This spine is an organ and called esca which emits light known as a photophore with the help of bacteria.

This organ is often used to lure in its prey and is used for hunting. The body of this fish was not designed for speed and is usually seen (not often) slowly chugging along in the water.

Anglerfish eyes are very small structures on their larger frames and are not very helpful in their dark environments. They rely on their senses to move around, hunt and eat.

We can’t forget to mention the Angler fish’s teeth. These teeth are translucent needle-like structures and frame the anglerfish’s mouth.

They are more playable than many other fish teeth as they are always working to redirect prey into the digestive tract.

Angler Fish Facts #2

Let’s talk about the female/male dynamic. Unfortunately, the males in this equation lose big time as their sole purpose for living is to find a female and mate with her.

This is no ordinary interaction. Once a male finds a female partner, he will literally latch onto her with his teeth where his flesh will eventually become a part of hers.

He will lose all of his main organs with exception to the testes for reproduction. A female has been known to carry anywhere from 3-6 male structures in her lifetime.

The male anglerfish carries out a very parasitic-like life with his host female.

Angler Fish Facts #3

Let’s talk about their behaviors. Some might say that the anglerfish is rather lazy due to its slow movements and, not exactly, sleek body composition.

The anglerfish will slowly mill around waiting for their prey to come to them. Their jaws can extend to accommodate prey two times the size of their frame.

Speaking of that frame, they can store food in their bodies which help them survive in their stark, food scarce environments.

This also makes sense considering these fish can weigh in around 100 lb at maturity.

These fish typically roam the ocean floor and are not very picky about the food that comes their way. This means that they will eat anything carnivorous in nature from crustaceans to any passing by fish.

Angler Fish Facts #4

Let’s talk about their mouth. The angler fish has a huge mouth, featuring sharply pointed teeth in rows. The rows are arranged in two rows, where the front teeth are much larger than the back row.

The teeth of the angler fish are hinged for maximum bite and to push the prey down they the hatchet. The second row of teeth feature much smaller and less sharp teeth.

This makes sense as the large teeth puncture and the smaller teeth allow the angler to break up the skin of the fish it’s eating.

Angler Fish Facts #5

Let’s talk about if their dangerous. A human can never reach the depths of the where the angler fish lives, so no they are not dangerous to humans at all.

If actually impossible, like physically impossible for a human to be able to withstand the pressure at the sea level where the angler fish lives.

Typically they live in the areas below 6600 feet below the surface of the ocean. And they live completely in darkness, that is the area they inhabit and at the depth they’re at, they see no sunlight.

A final note – People often wonder if this fish is any good on a plate. You can find the anglerfish on the market most often in Korea or Japan where they fetch a luxury price tag.

Those who have eaten an anglerfish say that the tail is the most edible portion of the fish and tastes much like lobster.

Angler Fish Facts #6

Despite being ferocious looking the orange angler fish is actually a smaller fish only growing to about 5-10 inches in length and at maximum are known to grow up to about 100 pounds.

An interesting note is that female angler fish are typically much bigger than their male counterparts.

We offer charter fishing trips, whale watching excursion, sport fishing trips, private charters and water activities on the central coast of California. If you’re interested click here to learn more.

Why Ocean Whitefish is the Most Underrated Fish in the Sea

Known to scientists by its binomial name, Caulolatilus princeps, the ocean whitefish is a species of titlefish that calls the Pacific Ocean its home. Ocean whitefish swim primarily along the coast of California, though in rare instances, they have been spotted north and south of their usual zone.

Not a lot of people know about ocean whitefish, not to mention, most of them have no idea how to distinguish one from a salmon. Ocean whitefish deserve more praise than they receive because of their graceful and calm presence in the Pacific Ocean. Since ocean whitefish are not dominant predators in the ocean, they do not raise problems with other fish, minding their business as they go about their days.

Where Are Ocean Whitefish Located?

With a few exceptions, ocean whitefish are unique to California. At times, they will swim a bit too far upstream than they are used to and they will end up inhabiting the waters near British Columbia. Ocean whitefish have also been spotted around the coasts of Peru and Ecuador, specifically near the Galapagos Islands. The cold temperature and salt levels in the Pacific Ocean make for the perfect central location for ocean whitefish.

Prime Time of Year for Ocean Whitefish

The peak season for ocean whitefish begins at the tailend of winter and continues into the following spring. The reason for this is that the water becomes cooler as the weather gets colder. Since ocean whitefish are cold-blooded, their internal temperature is not regulated by their body, but rather by their surroundings. They swim closer to the shore and the inland areas to keep warm.

Sports Fishing and Ocean Whitefish

Ocean whitefish are highly sought after and coveted by people who partake in sports fishing. The definition of sports fishing is very similar to its name, in that people fish as a sport, competing with fellow fishermen and comparing the sizes of the fish they caught. Not all sports fishing occasions are competitive, though. Some people enjoy fishing recreationally, for leisure. Sports fishing is an activity that many people enjoy, especially in the summertime.

Ocean whitefish respond best when fishermen use a standard fishing pole with bait attached to the hook. When an ocean whitefish latches onto the bait, the fish will pose a challenge for the fisherman. Ocean whitefish are known for their tendency to tug and pull against the fishing line, so anyone who catches an ocean whitefish has to put in a decent amount of effort in order to keep the fish from escaping. People engaging in an afternoon of sports fishing are always up for the thrill of catching ocean whitefish.

How to See an Ocean Whitefish in Real Life

Whether you are embarking on a sports fishing trip or you just want to sail the ocean blue while gazing at aquatic life, renting a private charter is an excellent idea. Privately-owned charter fishing boats vary in length, as well as capacity in terms of how many passengers each boat can hold. It’s vital that you check the dimensions of the charter you want to rent. Ensuring that the sport fishing boat can accommodate everyone in your party is essential as well.

Morro Bay, California, is a prime location for spotting ocean whitefish. Located in San Luis Obispo County, the water of Morro Bay is exquisite. It is translucent enough so that you can clearly observe fish swimming near the surface of the water, while also leaving something to the imagination. You might even spot a whale or two!

Rock Cod Fish: The Most Popular Catch for California Anglers

With its vibrant red scales and distinct bulbous eyes, the rock cod fish or rockfish is one of the most popular catches for California anglers. There are over 100 different subspecies of rockfish, and you can find 56 of those rock cod fish subspecies in Southern California fishing grounds. This fish is lean and has a mild flavor, making it a favorite catch of many anglers and hobby fisherman. Catching a rock cod fish can be challenging, but no guts no glory as they say.

Where is the best place to catch a rock cod fish?

Rockfish tend to congregate in deep coastal waters of about 9800 feet deep. As their namesake indicates, rock cod fish prefer waters with ample rock outcrops. Morro Bay in California is teeming with rockfish and is an ideal place for catching these tasty critters.

What’s the best way to catch a rock cod fish?

The state of California allows you to use up to two hooks per line. While it’s true that catching rock cod fish is a challenge, there is one basic but very effective way to create the ideal rigging for rock cod fishing. This rigging is called a Double Drooper Loop.

To create the Double Drooper Loop, you’ll want to use a pole that’s rated anywhere between the twenty to fifty-pound range, or fifteen to forty pound range. You’ll need a twenty-five to thirty-pound monofilament for the line. As far as the hooks go, you’ll want two, circle hooks in the 2/0 or 4/0 range for the best results. Torpedo-style sinkers or lead weights in the six to twelve-ounce range are ideal for making a Double Drooper Loop.

What do you do once the rigging is tied?

The most important step is to insert the loop through the point-side of the hole on the hook. Insert the loop through one eye of the torpedo sinker on the bottom loop. Then, loop it over the sinker.

Next, attach the bait. A strip of squid, anchovies, or sardines is ideal for catching a rock cod fish. Attach a piece of your bait to each hook. You want to make sure that the bait is attached at the end of the hook so that it will flap around in the current and attract a rock cod fish. The more natural the bait looks at the end of the line, the more likely you’ll be to get a bite.

What do you do once a rock cod fish bites the line?

If you’re using circle hooks, which are ideal for a Double Drooper Loop, you don’t want to set the hook when you get a bite. Once the fish bites, wind up. When you’ve hooked a fish, don’t pump the line, either. Instead, lift it and wind down. If you pump the line, you risk losing the fish. When it comes to catching a rock cod fish, you need to be patient. It’s vital that you use a slow, steady wind.

Don’t want to rig a line yourself? You’re in luck. There are many pre-made rigs you can buy specifically for rock cod fishing in Morro Bay. The best pre-made rigging is a braided line for the reel. You simply tie a swivel to the braid and then tie the monofilament line. Using a braided line is perfect for deep water fishing because a braided line enables you to feel positive hookups in deep water.

The next time you want to try your hand at catching a tasty rock cod fish, keep these tips in mind for rigging the ideal line. You’re guaranteed to catch a prize rock cod fish in Morro Bay.
